New cardiologist inspired by family, early medical work

Valparaiso, Ind. – When Jessica D. Williams, M.D., was 8 years old, her parents bought her a toy doctor’s kit, and it was the most exciting gift she had ever received. The seed was planted, and now this highly-trained non-invasive cardiologist has returned to her home state of Indiana to help patients with heart disease live happier, healthier lives.
Dr. Williams, the newest member of Porter Physician Group’s Northwest Indiana Cardiovascular Physicians, is now accepting patients.
Aside from the toy doctor’s kit, Dr. Williams’ first encounter with helping people in the medical profession began in high school, when she worked as a nurse’s aide in the cardiac unit at Methodist Hospitals in Gary.
“During this experience, I was able to witness cardiologists managing various heart diseases, and I could see that they were making a difference in people’s lives. I knew this was the career for me,” Williams said.
But ultimately, her father’s massive heart attack during her freshman year in college sealed her decision to enter the cardiology field.
“My father has significant heart disease, but he has been able to maintain a decent quality of life since his heart attack. I know this is because of the excellent cardiac care, and family support, he has received over the years. I wanted to be able to make a difference in the lives of patients with heart disease, like my father’s cardiac physicians have done for him.”
Dr. Williams grew up in Gary, Indiana and was the valedictorian of her graduating class at Horace Mann High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Northwestern University and completed additional pre-medicine courses at Indiana University Northwest. She received her medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Kentucky. Dr. Williams completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She is fellowship-trained in Cardiovascular Disease from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, and is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease.
While she has a special interest in treating patients with heart failure and those who experience cancer- and chemotherapy-related heart diseases, Dr. Williams also supports cardiovascular disease prevention.
“I enjoy interacting with patients, and I am interested in the overall health and well-being of a person, not just their medical conditions,” she said.
